Margarita Island Weather
Part of the lesser Antilles chain, Margarita Island is just 12 miles off the coast of South America. It is the largest of Venezuela's 72 islands measuring 30 miles from east to west and 15 miles from north to south. At 11 minutes north of the equator, Margarita Island lies south of the hurricane belt and has not experienced a major hurricane in nearly 50 years.
Temperatures on Margarita Island are fairly constant throughout the year, varying by only 10 degrees from the warm period to the cooler period. The dry season (verano) is the coolest time of year and lasts from December to March. Moderate rain falls from June through October, the hottest and wettest time of the year, known as (invierno).
There is a constant breeze on Margarita Island and even the hottest days begin to cool in mid—afternoon. Day temperatures hover at 85 degrees average and night temperatures in the cooler months of December to March drop to 68 degrees at night. Water temperatures average a pleasant 76 degrees.
The Mainland
Although temperatures are fairly constant throughout the year, they do vary with altitude, dropping several degrees with every 1000 meter increase.
The Andean and coastal mountain ranges will require warmer clothing and if you plan on climbing the peaks of the Andes, a good down jacket would be wise. There are also many regional weather variations in the amount of rainfall, for example, rainfall in the higher mountains is quite high while rainfall in the Coro desert rainfall is almost nil. The Amazon has no dry season with annual rainfall exceeding 80 inches per year.
