Isla de Margarita

Prior to 1500, Spanish explorers discovered that local Island natives possessed huge pearls the size of duck eggs. Before long, pearl hunters began to arrive which eventually spelled doom for the Island natives known as the Caribe. Slaves were imported to harvest these vast riches. On a nearby Island, Coche, the treasure hunters were able to harvest an amazing 820 lbs of pearls in a single month in 1529.

Today, Margarita Island is primarily a vacation spot for Venezuelans. For the most part, Margarita is unknown by North Americans, except for sailors and wind surfers. It is quite popular however, with Scandinavian, French, Italian and Canadian travelers.

Monkey Business provides information about tours and treks on Margarita Island and excursions into Venezuela's exotic interior. Monkey Business does this as a service to facilitate travel and encourage tourists to consider Magarita Island and Venezuela as a travel destination.

Most tourists come here for the sand, surf, laid back attitude and sunny weather, but there is much more to appreciate about this special place.
